Last night we watched one of the girls favourite movies: Tomorrowland. The girls love the adventure, the message, and the fact that the main character, Casey, is a smart, brave, and tough girl.
Traditionally when we were getting ready for a Disney vacation we’d have a count down to get ready to go. We would watch a movie and then for the next two or three days we would partake in themed activities relating to the movie.
We aren’t going to Disney this year, for various reasons, but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring a little of the count down magic into our lives.
One of the big themes of the movie is technology, so unbeknownst to the children, Sarah has ordered on of the coolest robotics kits I have come across. We already own a Sphero and that is pretty cool, but hopefully by Thursday we will be playing around with one of these: The MOSS exofabulatronixx 5200!
Doesn’t the name sound super futuristic? It functions by snapping together modular cubes that have unique programs / abilities allowing a limitless combination to build whatever type of robot you want! I can’t wait to try this out. I’m sure there will be a post in the future where we can talk about how cool this thing is.
The second theme is adventure, therefore in combination with The Great Playground Hunt we are heading across town to an “electronic” playground. I’m not sure exactly what it entails, but I have heard it is a much larger version of something we have at our local rec center. It’s a climbing structure that lights up and has a control panel to set up different styles of games. Ella told me that she enjoyed a “capture the flag” game where each team has to go around and hit all of their colour lights before the other team can get to all of theres.
The last theme is doomsday. The world is in dire straights and the end is nigh! At the beginning of the movie there is a montage of Cssey’s teachers going on about everything wrong with the world, through this we see her with her hand raised high just waiting to be call on. When she finally is she asks “I get it, things are bad, but what are we doing to fix it?”
This question is reverberated often by our children. We are starting to do two things with this: We are going to fix it and we will celebrate those individuals that are working to fix it.
For us we are starting with heading down to the storm ponds near our house armed with gloves and garbage bags to clean up all the garbage and debris that has piled up in and around the ponds.
Second we are going to find the helpers, the dreamers, the people taking positive action in our world and share it. We’ll find articles and make a posterboard to remind us that there is still good out there and we plan to share those articles via twitter @Gr8BigBeautiful and here on our blog.
For now just remember “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day!”
